Prerequisites: Basic Keelboat Skills
Boat: Tiller-steered Colgate 26'
Our Basic Keelboat courses are formatted to take the novice from no knowledge to the competent sailor.
The Keelboat Challenge allows anyone to Test-Out of KeelBoat 1 & 2 at Ocean Sailing Academy (OSA)!
We will test your basic skills, starting with sailing and concluding with skippering ability and crew coordination.
These challenges will take place on boats up to 30 feet.

- Parts of the Boat
- Parts of the Rig
- Knot Tying
- Line Management
- Sail Bending and Flaking
- Points of Sail
- Tacking and Jibing
- Reefing (Shortening Sail)
- Docking under Power
- Crew Overboard Recovery
Keelboat Part 2 Skills Include:
- Fine tuning Sail Trim
- Advanced Sail Handling
- Close Quarter Sail Control
- Speed Control
- Chart Reading and Line of Sight Navigation
- Crew Coordination (so your friends can have fun too!)
- Sail Planning
- Docking under Sail
- Rules of the Road
- More Crew Overboard Recovery Practice
- Starting and Stopping
- Skippering Certification
Ocean Sailing Academy teaches classes in full-day sessions with up to 6 students per instructor, guaranteeing students a high level of personalized attention.
Upon completion of either Basic Keelboat Parts 1 & 2 or the Keelboat Challenge, the student is eligible to receive the U.S. Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification.
